Many of the locomotives that you will see in our museum have been restored on site. Our team of volunteers lovingly  rebuild, repair and replace locomotive parts, from huge water boilers, to smoke boxes, wheels and bogeys and chassis . Our workshop facilities enable us to make new locomotive parts and restore them to their former glory.

Locomotives can be assessed to determine whether they can be returned to working order or whether they are to be made available for display in our museum building. We have exceptional facilities on site to repair and conserve our own and guest locomotives.

The workshop is not generally accessible to the public, but on certain operating days, special guided tours are offered included with your ticket, where one of our volunteers will guide you around the areas of the workshop currently safely visible

Our volunteers come from all different backgrounds and get trained up and shown how to use traditional crafts and specialist heritage skills. To find out more go to our volunteering page.
